Angle brooms
A rotating brush that casts the material off to one side, typically up to 30 degrees each way, so the operator windrows debris, dust or light snow as they drive. Fast, simple and the cheaper option. It works when there is somewhere for the pile to go.
Pickup brooms
The same brush with a collection hopper behind it, so the dirt leaves with the machine. On a street, a client parking lot or anywhere the material cannot just be pushed into the next lane, this is the one. The skid steer pickup broom we carry holds 0.6 cubic yards, which means fewer trips to the pile.
Rotary sweepers for loaders and backhoes

Excavator brushes and sweepers
Fixed brushes and powered sweepers on the end of a boom or a tiltrotator, for cleaning surfaces the machine cannot drive onto.
Light snow is part of this
A broom clears a light fall off pavement better than a blade does, because it takes the last layer rather than leaving a scraped film to freeze. It does not replace a plow in a real storm.
Most machines can run one, which is not true of every powered tool.
Flow
Brooms are the easy powered attachment. The skid steer brooms we carry run on 10 to 25 GPM, which is standard flow, so most machines on a site can turn one without a high flow package. That is worth knowing, because it is the opposite of the mulcher conversation.
Width and angle
A 72 inch broom sweeps about 63 inches once you angle it 30 degrees, so the effective width is always less than the sticker width. Size it for the pass you actually want to make.
Wafer material
Brushes come as poly, steel wire or a mix. Poly is gentler on a finished surface, steel cuts packed material, and the mix is the practical middle. Wafers are wear parts and they are replaceable individually, so ask what replacements cost before you choose.
Ground contact
A floating linkage keeps the brush in contact as the surface changes, which sweeps better and wears the bristles evenly. A broom that is jammed hard onto the pavement wears out fast and sweeps no better.
Mount
Skid steer tools run a universal skid steer quick attach. Loader and backhoe sweepers mount to the machine hitch, and excavator brushes go on a coupler or a tiltrotator.
Questions we get asked
What is the difference between an angle broom and a pickup broom?
An angle broom casts the material off to the side into a windrow. A pickup broom collects it into a hopper so it leaves with the machine. If you have somewhere to push the pile, the angle broom is faster and cheaper. If you are sweeping a street, a client lot or anywhere the debris cannot stay, take the pickup broom.
Do I need high flow to run a broom?
Usually not. The skid steer brooms we carry run on 10 to 25 GPM, which is standard flow on most machines. Brooms are one of the few powered attachments that do not force a machine upgrade. Give us your flow rating and we will confirm it.
Can I use a broom to clear snow?
For a light fall on pavement, yes, and it does a better job than a blade because it takes the last layer instead of leaving a scraped film that refreezes. For a real storm you want a pusher or a plow. A lot of contractors run both and use the broom for the finish pass.
How long do the brushes last?
It depends on the surface and how hard the broom is pushed down. The wafers are wear parts and they are replaced individually rather than as a whole brush, and a floating linkage that keeps even ground contact makes them last considerably longer than a broom jammed into the pavement. Ask your advisor about replacement wafers when you order.
Will a broom fit my skid steer?
Very likely. Our skid steer brooms mount on a universal skid steer quick attach and run on standard flow for machines in the 45 to 75 HP range. Tell us the make and model and we will confirm it.
