Blades and Grading Attachments in Southern Alberta

Foothills Equipment carries 23 blades and grading attachments for motor graders, dozers, wheel loaders, excavators, mini excavators and skid steers, from Weldco-Beales, AMI, FMS, TMG Industrial and Steelwrist. We are in Calgary and Lethbridge, serving Southern Alberta, everything south of Red Deer. These are the tools for the last pass, the one the client actually sees.

Snow plows and snow blades sit on their own page. If you are clearing snow rather than moving dirt, start at snow blades and pushers.

23 blades across five lines.

Five machines, five kinds of blade.

  • Motor grader moldboards

Straight, manual angle and hydraulic angle blades, the working edge of the grader. Plus the lift groups and hitches they hang on, and a push block for counterweight and for pushing a scraper.

  • Dozer blades

Six way angle and tilt blades, manual angle blades, chip blades for light material and coal seam blades for the mining side. Six way is the one contractors ask for, because the operator shapes the cut from the seat without getting off.

  • Wheel loader blades

Straight, manual angle and hydraulic angle blades, plus a loader mounted dozer blade. Turns a loader into a machine that can push and shape as well as carry.

  • Excavator chuck blades and grading beams

A chuck blade is a toothless blade on the end of the stick for backfilling, spreading and shaping without a second machine. A grading beam is longer and flatter again, and on a tiltrotator it is how an excavator finishes a surface properly.

  • Skid steer land planes and road graders

A frame with a fixed or hydraulic cutting edge that levels and crowns a driveway, a lane or a lot in passes. The scarifier version breaks the packed surface first so the plane has something to move.

Start from the finish you owe the client.

  • How fine is the finish?

Rough grade, spreading and backfilling is one tool. Finished grade someone is going to pave or seed is another. Toothed blades move material, toothless blades and beams leave a surface.

  • How many functions do you want from the cab?

Manual angle is cheaper and fine if you set it once for the day. Hydraulic angle and six way blades pay off when the ground changes every hundred feet, because the operator never gets out.

  • The mount decides most of it

Grader and loader blades go on the machine hitch or lift group, so the hitch standard has to match. Excavator blades and beams go pin on, on a coupler, or on a tiltrotator, and the tiltrotator version is a different tool in practice because it can hold an angle the machine is not sitting at. Skid steer tools run a universal skid steer quick attach.

  • Cutting edges are wear parts

Bolt on edges come off with a wrench, and having a source for replacements locally matters more over the life of the blade than the first price does.

Questions we get asked

What is a chuck blade for?

Backfilling, spreading and shaping from the excavator you already have on site. It is a toothless blade on the end of the stick, so the machine that dug the trench can also close it and level it without waiting on a dozer or a skid steer. On a tiltrotator it gets considerably more useful, because the blade can hold a slope the machine is not sitting on.

What is the difference between a grading beam and a chuck blade?

A beam is longer and flatter and it is built for a finished surface. A chuck blade is shorter and stronger and it is built for moving material. If the next thing to happen is paving or seeding, you want the beam.

Do you sell grader moldboards and cutting edges?

Yes. Straight, manual angle and hydraulic angle moldboards, plus endgates, lift groups and hitches, and the cutting edge rack with toolbox for the yard. Tell us the grader and an advisor confirms the fit.

Will a land plane level my gravel driveway?

Yes, and it is the usual tool for it on a skid steer. It cuts the high spots and carries the material into the low ones over a few passes. If the surface is packed hard, the scarifier version breaks it first, which is what makes the difference on a lane that has not been touched in a couple of years.

Can I get a six way blade for a dozer?

Yes. Six way angle and tilt blades are in the line, and they are the ones worth paying for if the operator is shaping rather than just pushing, because every adjustment happens from the seat.

Tell us the machine and the finish you need.

Rough grade or final pass, gravel or clay, one machine or three. An advisor will point you at the blade that gets there in the fewest passes.
